The Strength of Women—Comparison and Contrast between “BJ’s Diary” and “Pride and Prejudice”
Name: Grace Class: Freshman B
“Bridget Jones’s Diary”, a film released in 2001, portrayed Bridget Jones as a single woman yearning for love. Throughout the movie, Bridget encountered opportunities for finding true love, but unfortunately missed these chances. After turns and bents on the pathway of love, Bridget eventually got together with Darcy, a nice, smart, and handsome man who accepted and loved her “just the way she was.” Even though the movie was based on the book of the same name, a substantial part of it was adapted from the novel called “Pride and Prejudice”, a classic about the misunderstandings and later mutual enlightenment between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, written by Jane Austen and published in 1813.
Although it might not be easy to sense the connection between the movie and the book, we would still find interesting similarities if we paid close attention to their details. The movie was mainly about Bridget, a single woman at an age suitable for marriage, and her relationship with two men in her life, Daniel and Darcy. On the other hand, the book presented five sisters of the Bennet family as the main characters, but actually emphasized on the second eldest daughter, Elizabeth. Austen, the author of the book focused on Elizabeth’s relationships with men that surrounded her, especially Wickham and Darcy. Both male antagonists in the movie and the book were named Darcy, and this similarity was no coincidence but an illustration of the movie’s adaptation from the book.
An essential point in comparing the movie and the book were the relationships between the opponents competing for the love from the female protagonists, and also the connections between all of them. These two sets of opponents were Daniel and Darcy from the movie, and Wickham and Darcy from the book. There was tension within these two sets of people because of personal conflicts from their past. Between Daniel and Darcy, it was Daniel betraying Darcy by having an affair with his wife, which led to the destruction of his marriage. Just like Daniel and Darcy, for Wickham and Darcy, the hostility was the result of Wickham’s abuse of Darcy’s kindness towards him by being frivolous and extravagant, even worse, by attempting to elope with Darcy’s younger sister. At first, both Bridget and Elizabeth were deceived by lies about Darcy’s lack of integrity. But as the story unfolded, Bridget and Elizabeth eventually learned about Darcy’s virtuous, decent character. These revelations were important turning points in the story, causing the uniting of the female protagonists with Darcy.
In spite of the similarities mentioned above, there were still some differences between the movie and the book, which were obviously manifested in several aspects such as the settings, plots, and characters. Take the setting, for instance. The background of the movie was in modern day England while the story of the novel was set in 19th century England. As for the plot, the movie surrounded its one and only storyline on three characters: Bridget, Darcy, and Daniel. In contrast, the book had more than one story line and also uncovered the stories of Elizabeth’s other sisters, for example, Jane’s love affair with Mr. Bingley, and also Lydia’s relationship with Wickham. As for characters, though both mentally strong and attractive in their own style, the two female protagonists gave audiences and readers distinct impressions. Bridget was cute in a silly manner and always getting herself into awkward situations. She could never say the appropriate things at the right moment, which was clearly shown when she was required to make an introduction speech at a business outing. Bridget just blurted out anything that was on her mind and made a fool of herself while causing the embarrassment of others. Compared to Bridget, Elizabeth had the liveliness and quick wit as her most appealing features. She seemed to understand the situations going on around her and always carried herself in a dignified way. An illustration of this feature was Elizabeth being able to poise herself dignifiedly and gracefully the time she visited the Bingleys’ even when she knew she was not welcomed.
I really enjoyed watching the movie and also reading the book. I think the mental strength of both female protagonists served as an incentive to those of us that watch the movie or read the book. The power within their characters was shown in their pursuits for true love. Neither of them was afraid to express their true selves and not once did they recoil in the face of love. Bridget took the initiative and spoke of her affections for Darcy when he was about to go far away, and Elizabeth showed incompatible courage in refusing Darcy’s aunt, Lady Kathrine de Bourgh, when the Lady warned her against marrying Darcy. I learned that women could be loved and respected by others by being themselves.
Superficially, the movie and the book appear to be two completely different texts. The plots, the characters, and the settings of these texts were seemingly different. But by delving into the core of their essence, I found the movie and the book alike in spirit—both depicting the strength of a woman. Since it was not easy to realize the similarities between the movie and the book, I was especially surprised and delighted upon discovering their correlations. The movie was infused with profound concepts by adapting the main plotline of a classic novel. Also, by adding creative elements like portraying Bridget’s own imagination and thoughts on screen, I truly think the makers of “Bridget Jones’s Diary” produced an immensely compelling film!
